WELCOME! This ReadMe has INSTALLATION, TROUBLESHOOTING, and ANNOTATION information for SMALL BLUE PLANET - The Real Picture World Atlas, version 2.0.3.c
Please remember to rip off that REGISTRATION CARD (from the packaging) and send it in.
INSTALLATION:
1. There's nothing to install, but the program will run faster if you drag the SMALL BLUE PLANET application onto your hard disk. To speed up the Gallery, drag the Thumbnails (sbpWorld.thb) to the same place.
2. SBP will run faster still if you give it a big memory partition. More is better. If you have lots of RAM, select this application on your hard drive, select "Get Info" from the File menu, and give it what memory you have available (For details about this, check the Apple Menu: ╥About This Macintosh╙.)
TROUBLESHOOTING:
1. If your window is smaller than your monitor, you are low on AVAILABLE RAM. It will work fine with this smaller window but if you want to see a bigger window on your monitor, free up some RAM by quitting all other applications, or rebooting your machine with with only the necessary extensions. (For example, you need your CD-ROM drive extension; but you don╒t need QuickTime for this application.) In extremely low RAM situations, SBP drops the synchronized globe in the Chronosphere to allow you to use the rest of the program.
2. Make sure you have only the current version of SMALL BLUE PLANET on your disk.
3. Make sure that your CD-ROM driver is up to date. The driver is a small file in the Extensions folder, within your System Folder. (If you are running System 6.x, it will be directly in your System Folder.) Usually you can update your driver for free by contacting the manufacturer of your CD-ROM drive.
4. If you have multiple monitors and SMALL BLUE PLANET appears on the wrong one or fails to appear; use the Monitors control panel to set the preferred monitor to 256 colors. Set the other monitor(s) to anything but 256 colors.
5) As a last resort, try disabling your extensions to see if an init conflict is causing your problem.

ABOUT ANNOTATION:
1. A Note is a brief written comment that you attach to a map or photo. The note shows up on the image as an icon that you choose when you create the note. To read the note, you mouse down on the icon.
2. TO CREATE A NOTE: select the Make Notes Tool. (This is the Control Panel button with the capital T. If you don╒t see it, use the Panel Mode command under the Edit menu to change the Control Panel to the Expert Mode.) Click on the image where you want the note icon to appear. When the dialog box appears type in your note (maximum 256 characters) and choose an icon. Return to the image and try out your note.
3. TO MOVE A NOTE: shift-drag the note to the new location. To edit a note, control-click it. You are returned to the dialog box to edit the text, change the icon, or delete the note.
4. DISPLAYING THE NOTES: If one or both of the note icon buttons (the two little arrow buttons just below the Make Notes Tool) are enabled, you have annotations available in the image you are viewing. Each button controls the display of a set of notes.
4a. The upper button (with the larger arrow) is the Common Notes button. It always controls the same set of notes, called the Common Notebook. When it is depressed, any note in the Common Notebook will appear at its proper location in the image it was attached to. Any note you create will save to this button unless you choose to name a personal notebook.
4b. The lower button (with the smaller arrow) is the Personal Notes button. It controls any other set of notes you choose. You create and name a new set of notes with the New Notebook command, under the File menu. You can retrieve a set of notes with the Open Notebook command.
5. When you create a new note with the Text Tool, one of the note buttons will be depressed. Thereafter the new note╒s icon will appear at the same place on the same image whenever that Notes button is depressed, unless you move or delete it.
6. You may wish to keep all your notes in the Common Notebook (actually a file named "Common.nwb" in your Preferences Folder), in which case you don╒t need to use the File menu commands or the Private Notes button. This is the simplest approach for annotation. However, you may wish to keep your notes separate from someone else, or notes on architecture separate from geography notes. In that case you would want to think of clever names for each set of notes and use the File menu commands to create and access them.
